Ex-MP bumped to riding next door after Alleslev’s floor-crossing

Costas Menegakis is back to fighting for his seat in the riding he once represented after being displaced from his candidacy of choice by the floor-crossing former Liberal MP who beat him in the last election.

Menegakis represented the riding of Richmond Hill as an MP in the last Conservative government after he won the seat in the 2011 federal election. The next year, the federal electoral districts were redistributed based on the 2011 census.

To Menegakis, this meant choosing between running as the candidate in Richmond Hill or the adjacent riding of Aurora—Oak Ridges—Richmond Hill in the 2015 election. He went with the latter — in what he calls a “50-50” choice — and lost to then-Liberal Alleslev by just over two per cent of the vote.

Menegakis won the nomination in Aurora—Oak Ridges—Richmond Hill for the Conservative Party for the second time last February, and was expected to represent the party there in the 2019 federal election. But cue Alleslev, who crossed the floor from the Liberals to join the Conservatives on Sept. 17.

Menegakis said he stepped down as the party’s nominee once Alleslev joined the party.

“I thought it was best for me to step aside and give her the opportunity to win her nomination there,” he said.

On the day she crossed the floor, Menegakis tweeted his congratulations to her for joining the Conservatives.

Just over two weeks later, he was nominated for his old riding of Richmond Hill, where he was uncontested. He said he’s received a warm welcome back to his former riding.

“I’ve already been out door-knocking; we’ve knocked on thousands of doors,” Menegakis said.

Liberal MP Majid Jowhari currently holds the seat. Menegakis expects he’ll run against Jowhari in then next election, but the incumbent has not yet been officially nominated by the Liberal Party.

“I’m looking forward to winning my seat back in Richmond Hill,” Menegakis said.
