Marcus Smart could miss up to two rounds of the playoffs.
His absence would deal a blow to the playoff hopes of the Celtics, who are looking forward to having point guard Kyrie Irving for the first time in the postseason.
Smart is averaging 8.9 points, 2.5 rebounds and 4 assists as the shooting guard.
He left the court holding his left hip early in the Celtics 116-108 loss to the Orlando Magic on April 7.
