The Irving Oil refinery in Ireland has resumed normal operations after a blockade was removed early Tuesday. The blockade lasted for six days and was initiated by protests over high fuel prices.

As of midday, the Whitegate refinery, which is Ireland’s only oil refinery, is back to full capacity. The protests had caused significant disruption, with 600 out of 1,500 petrol stations in Ireland running dry.

April Cunningham from Irving Oil stated, “Our Irving Oil Whitegate Refinery, Ireland’s only refinery, continues to operate, safely delivering energy products to our customers.” This return to operations is crucial for many dependent on consistent fuel supply.

Meanwhile, across the globe, a fire at Viva Energy’s Corio refinery in Australia added pressure to an already tight fuel supply system. The fire burned for 13 hours and threatened petrol supplies vital to the region.

The Corio refinery processes about 120,000 barrels of oil per day and supplies around half of Victoria’s fuel needs. It also accounts for 10% of Australia’s total fuel supply. Chris Bowen noted that the fire occurred in a section where hydrocarbons are chemically modified to enhance octane ratings.

This incident highlights a structural issue within Australia’s refining landscape—domestic refining capacity has significantly decreased over recent decades. Graham Finlay commented on the protests in Ireland, saying it “really was unsustainable for these people,” reflecting the urgency of addressing fuel price concerns.

In response to the protests in Ireland, the government announced a substantial 750-million-euro package aimed at cutting fuel taxes. This move underscores the seriousness of public discontent regarding rising fuel costs.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding whether the resolution of these protests will lead to lasting changes in fuel pricing or further unrest. The situation remains fluid as both countries navigate their respective energy challenges.
