The Bridger Pipeline expansion, dubbed ‘Keystone Light’, has been authorized by U.S. President Donald Trump. This project partially revives the controversial Keystone XL pipeline amidst ongoing environmental concerns.

The pipeline will deliver over 550,000 barrels per day of Alberta oil to U.S. facilities and refineries. It is a joint venture between Calgary-based South Bow and U.S.-based Bridger.

At peak capacity, the 1,050-kilometre pipeline will move two-thirds as much oil as Keystone XL. More than 70% of it will be built within existing pipeline corridors and 80% on private land.

Environmentalists express concern about potential spills from the pipeline. Bridger Pipeline has a history of significant pipeline accidents, including 2.7 million litres spilled in North Dakota.

Danielle Smith emphasized the importance of this project for North American energy dominance, stating, “The U.S. is our most important trading partner and we will continue to deliver energy to help secure North American energy dominance.”

The project could increase Canada’s crude exports to the U.S. by more than 12%. However, it still requires additional state and federal environmental approvals before construction can begin.

As of midday, there is no confirmed timeline for when construction will start or be completed. Potential court challenges could pose risks to the project’s progress.

What is driving the change in gas prices in Nova Scotia?

The price of gas in Nova Scotia is expected to change due to the Nova Scotia Energy Board invoking its interrupter. Currently, the price for regular self-serve gas stands at 152.7 cents per litre, while diesel is priced at 216.4 cents per litre.

This decision marks the third time the interrupter has been utilized since the onset of the U.S.-Israel war on Iran, which has significantly influenced global oil markets. The first two uses of the interrupter led to a price increase of 33 cents for diesel oil in just one week.

How have global events impacted local prices?

Internationally, the price of Brent crude has surged from $72.97 to nearly $103 since the conflict began. This increase in crude oil prices is expected to be passed onto gasoline prices, as indicated by industry experts.

In Edmonton, for example, gas prices have climbed sharply in response to the same global tensions. The highest recorded gas price in Edmonton on March 9, 2026, was $1.447 per litre, a notable increase from the highest price of $1.896 per litre recorded in 2022.

What are the implications for energy infrastructure?

The ongoing conflict has led to significant disruptions in energy infrastructure. According to Torbjorn Soltvedt, “A lot of very critical energy infrastructure has been either forced to shut down because of direct damage from drones and missiles.” This situation has raised concerns about the stability of crude oil supplies.

Suzanne Gray noted that reduced traffic through critical waterways, which transport approximately 20 percent of global crude supplies, is exacerbating the issue. Furthermore, the closure is affecting crude oil production in the Middle East, adding another layer of complexity to the situation.

What does the future hold?

Despite these challenges, Gray reassured that “there are ample supplies of crude oil in North America to feed our refineries and continue producing refined products.” However, the immediate future of gas prices remains uncertain as the market continues to react to geopolitical events.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding the exact timing and extent of the upcoming changes in gas prices in Nova Scotia, but consumers are advised to stay informed as the situation develops.
