NASA has unveiled an ambitious plan to construct a $20 billion base on the moon’s surface over the next seven years, a move that could redefine humanity’s presence in space. This initiative is part of the Artemis program, which aims to return American astronauts to the moon for the first time since 1972.

The decision to build a lunar base comes with the cancellation of the Gateway lunar space station, shifting focus to establishing a permanent presence near the moon’s south pole. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman emphasized the commitment to achieving this monumental task, stating, “NASA is committed to achieving the near-impossible once again, to return to the moon before the end of President Trump’s term, build a moon base, establish an enduring presence, and do the other things needed to ensure American leadership in space.”

Development of the moon base will occur in three phases, starting with robotic missions. NASA plans to increase the cadence of human moon landings beginning in 2028, with a target of undertaking crewed surface missions at least every six months after the Artemis 5 mission.

Since 2024, NASA has successfully landed three robotic vehicles on the moon, laying the groundwork for future missions. The agency will also leverage its Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) program to facilitate these lunar missions.

NASA’s investment of approximately $20 billion over the next seven years will be crucial in building the base through dozens of missions, collaborating with commercial and international partners. Isaacman noted, “We will invest approximately $20 billion over the next seven years and build it over dozens of missions, working together with commercial and international partners towards a deliberate and achievable plan.”

The planned lunar base is expected to support a variety of scientific research and exploration activities, marking a significant step in human space exploration. However, the moon base will not appear overnight, as Isaacman pointed out.

With a target year of 2028 for the first human moon landing, NASA is poised to reshape its lunar program significantly. The last time humans set foot on the moon was in 1972, making this initiative a historic return to lunar exploration.

As the plans unfold, uncertainties remain about specific timelines and the exact nature of international partnerships. Details remain unconfirmed.

This $20 billion investment signifies not only a technological challenge but also a strategic move to maintain American leadership in space exploration.
