Gas prices have lowered across Newfoundland and Labrador for the first time since late-February, with the Public Utilities Board announcing a 10 cents per litre decrease on March 25, 2026. Maximum prices for gasoline in Newfoundland now range between $1.82 and $1.98 per litre, while in Labrador, they sit between $1.60 and $1.93 per litre.

In addition to the drop in gas prices, diesel prices have also seen a significant reduction, falling almost 22 cents per litre in Newfoundland and 21.5 cents per litre in Labrador West and Churchill Falls. The new maximum prices for diesel are between $2.35 and $2.48 per litre in Newfoundland and $1.75 and $2.48 per litre in Labrador.

Furnace oil prices decreased by just over 19 cents per litre, while stove oil prices dropped by over 18.6 cents per litre in Labrador West and Churchill Falls. Residents have expressed relief at the price reductions but are demanding greater transparency from the Public Utilities Board regarding price fluctuations.

“It’s got to be a strain on just about everybody,” said Terry O’Neill, a local resident. He added, “A lot of them are saying, you know, enough is enough, right? They’re sort of demanding that the Public Utilities Board or the government step in and stop this ridiculous instability.” O’Neill noted that when prices increase, there is a snowballing effect on the cost of living, impacting various sectors.

The price of gasoline had not decreased since February 20, 2026, leading to growing frustration among consumers. The recent changes mark a crucial shift in the energy market for the region, which has faced rising costs in recent months.

Observers are closely monitoring the situation as they await further updates from the Public Utilities Board and the government regarding future price adjustments. Details remain unconfirmed.

Many Newfoundlanders are eager to know when the first signs of spring will appear after a long winter. However, a significant winter storm has struck the Metro region, leading to widespread disruptions.

As of this morning, schools and government offices in the area are closed due to the severe weather conditions. Public transportation services, including Metrobus and GoBus, are also off the road, leaving many commuters stranded.

Road conditions are reported to be messy, with travel not recommended in many areas. At St. John’s International Airport, approximately 15 cm of snow fell overnight, with another 10 cm expected before the weather changes to rain.

In a concerning development, an employee with the Town of Paradise was injured in a work-related accident amid the storm. The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) has since turned over the case to Occupational Health and Safety for further investigation.

In addition to the storm’s immediate impacts, residents are facing rising fuel costs. Gas prices increased by 7.9 cents per litre this morning, while diesel prices jumped by 12.2 cents. Furnace oil prices have also risen by about 10.5 cents per litre, and stove oil prices increased by less than 11 cents.

Jim Prime, a local resident, expressed frustration over the ongoing winter conditions, stating, “I do get questioned ‘when is the spring coming?’ and you know, I never want to answer that this time of year, because things can fluctuate so much.”

Observers are closely monitoring the situation as Environment Canada continues to issue warnings about the winter storm. The Town of Paradise and other local authorities are expected to provide updates as conditions evolve.

As the storm progresses, officials urge residents to stay safe and avoid unnecessary travel. Details remain unconfirmed regarding the full extent of the storm’s impact on the region.

Fire Breaks Out at Landings Eatery

A fire at the Landings Eatery and Pub in Portugal Cove has raised concerns as it has halted operations at the local ferry terminal. The fire broke out around 7:00 a.m. and emergency crews are actively battling the flames.

As the situation develops, no injuries have been reported thus far. Fire Chief Fred Hollett has issued a health advisory, urging residents with respiratory or breathing issues to consider leaving the area due to heavy smoke being pushed into the community by winds blowing off the water.

In addition to the fire, a winter storm watch is currently in effect for western and central Newfoundland, with forecasts predicting 15 to 25 cm of snow in these areas. This weather condition may complicate the firefighting efforts and the overall situation in Portugal Cove.

Chief Hollett stated, “This is a health advisory; anyone with respiratory or breathing issues in the impacted area ought to consider leaving the area.” The combination of the fire and adverse weather conditions has prompted heightened caution among local residents.

Authorities are working diligently to manage the fire and ensure public safety. The fire’s significance is underscored by its impact on ferry operations, which are crucial for transportation in the region.

Details remain unconfirmed as emergency services continue their response to the incident. The community is advised to stay tuned for updates as the situation unfolds.

In a separate incident, a man was charged with impaired driving after being pulled over downtown St. John’s around 2 a.m.. The driver, who was found to have a blood alcohol content over twice the legal limit, had his license suspended and vehicle impounded.

As emergency crews remain on the scene of the fire, the community’s focus is on ensuring safety and addressing the ongoing challenges posed by the weather and the fire.
