A harsh winter storm is hitting southern and eastern Ontario, prompting winter storm warnings, snowfall warnings, and freezing rain warnings across the region. These alerts have been issued from Parry Sound north to Timmins and from Sault Ste. Marie to Mattawa.

In northeastern Ontario, up to 20 centimetres of snow is expected to accumulate, with Environment Canada meteorologist Eric Tomlinson noting that the weather situation will be messy. He indicated that the storm will start with snow and may switch to ice pellets and freezing rain as it progresses.

As the storm approaches, many school buses have been cancelled in the affected regions, highlighting the impact on local communities. Ontario’s 511 reports that highway conditions are ranging from partly snow covered to fully snow covered, with some areas experiencing reduced visibility.

Conditions on the Coquihalla

In addition to the warnings in northeastern Ontario, hazardous winter conditions are also expected on the Coquihalla between Hope and Merritt. Up to 60 centimetres of snow is anticipated to fall by Thursday morning, accompanied by strong southwest wind gusts reaching up to 100 km/h.

These conditions are likely to result in near-zero visibility due to blowing snow, making travel particularly dangerous. Environment Canada has urged residents to prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions.

Tomlinson remarked, “As we head towards Sudbury, North Bay, that’s a really big mixed bag of precipitation for this event.” Snow is expected to begin in earnest late Wednesday afternoon as the low-pressure system approaches the highway.
