										<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A powerful tsunami was generated by a <strong>magnitude 8.8 earthquake</strong> in the Kuril-Kamchatka subduction zone on July 29, 2025. The event marked a significant moment in tsunami research.</p>
<p>The SWOT satellite recorded the first high-resolution space-based track of this major tsunami. It revealed unexpectedly complex wave patterns, challenging the long-standing assumption that large tsunamis behave as non-dispersive waves.</p>
<p>The earthquake&#8217;s rupture length was updated to nearly 400 kilometers, exceeding the previous estimate of 300 kilometers. This new data provides crucial insights into ocean dynamics and could enhance tsunami forecasting efforts.</p>
<p>Experts believe these findings may alter how we understand wave behavior and its coastal impact. Angel Ruiz-Angulo stated, &#8220;I think of SWOT data as a new pair of glasses.&#8221; He emphasized that this data has challenged the idea of big tsunamis being non-dispersive.</p>
<p>The Kuril-Kamchatka region has a history of producing some of the largest tsunamis on record, including the devastating 2011 Tohoku-oki tsunami. The latest observations suggest that this tsunami dispersed into multiple smaller wave components.</p>

<p>The study involving SWOT satellite data and DART buoy readings was published in The Seismic Record on November 26, 2025. It promises to reshape our approach to understanding and forecasting tsunamis.</p>
