Penticton Events and Incidents: Castanet Coverage

Penticton, B.C. is gearing up for an exciting year with a series of events and incidents that are set to engage the community. Among the highlights is the Glengarry Skating Club’s ‘Family Movie Night’ Ice Parade, scheduled for April 12, 2024, featuring approximately 150 skaters showcasing their talents on the ice.

In addition to the ice parade, the Canadian Sport School Hockey League (CSSHL) Championships will take place in Penticton from March 7 to 22, 2024. This event will see 106 teams competing in a total of 195 games, drawing attention from hockey enthusiasts across the region. Andy Oakes, a representative of the CSSHL, noted, “There are always lots of up-and-coming stars that are out there on the male side and on the female side.” This championship is expected to be a significant draw for local businesses and sports fans alike.

Meanwhile, the South Okanagan Women in Need Society (SOWINS) is celebrating 45 years of service to the community, providing essential support to women facing abuse and violence. Last year, SOWINS distributed 20,000 life-saving supplies, reflecting their ongoing commitment to the well-being of vulnerable populations in the area.

On a different note, safety concerns have arisen following the removal of fifteen commercial trucks from the road by highway patrol in the South Okanagan. On February 26, highway patrol conducted checks on 36 light and heavy commercial vehicles, issuing 10 violation tickets and ordering 16 inspections or repairs. Corporal Michael McLaughlin commented, “Good operators are getting undercut by unsafe drivers who do not spend money on repairs and maintenance,” highlighting the need for stricter enforcement of safety regulations.

Traffic delays are anticipated starting March 18, 2024, due to construction on Eckhardt Avenue, which may affect access to local businesses and event venues. Residents and visitors are advised to plan accordingly to avoid disruptions during this period.

In addition to these events, the first annual Once Upon A Spring Market will debut at the Penticton Lakeside Resort on April 4, 2024, promising a vibrant gathering for local artisans and community members. The Penticton Peach Festival is also on the horizon, scheduled for August 5 to 9, 2024, with a parade planned for August 8, further enriching the summer festivities.

As the community prepares for these events, the Penticton Job Fair on March 18, 2024, will feature over 50 employer booths, providing valuable opportunities for job seekers in the region. The fair aims to connect local talent with businesses looking to hire, fostering economic growth in the area.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding the ongoing lawsuit against Superstore, where a woman was injured by a falling bathroom door on August 13, 2024. The outcome of this case may have implications for local businesses and their safety protocols.
