Connor McDavid signed a two-year, $25 million extension with the Edmonton Oilers. This contract allows him to remain under contract through the 2027-28 season.

McDavid’s annual average value is $12.5 million. In comparison, teammate Leon Draisaitl has an annual average value of $14 million.

The structure of McDavid’s contract provides the Oilers with significant leverage in a potential trade. With two years remaining on his deal, the team finds itself in a maximum leverage situation.

The salary cap is projected to rise significantly in the coming years, making McDavid’s contract even more favorable for the Oilers. The salary cap is expected to be $95.5 million in 2025-26 and could reach $113.5 million by 2027-28.

However, McDavid has expressed a desire to play in Southern California. A source close to the situation noted, “He really wants to win a Stanley Cup in Edmonton, but he really wants to settle elsewhere.” This sentiment adds complexity to his future with the team.

Key details of McDavid’s contract:

Two-year extension worth $25 million

Annual average value of $12.5 million

Contract runs through 2027-28 season

Considered team-friendly due to rising salary cap

The Edmonton Oilers must now decide whether to trade McDavid or make a final push for the Stanley Cup. The uncertainty surrounding which teams McDavid would approve for a trade remains unresolved.

“Two years makes a lot of sense,” said Connor McDavid regarding his recent contract extension with the Edmonton Oilers. The deal, signed on October 6, 2025, raises questions about the team’s future following another disappointing playoff exit.

The Oilers were eliminated in the first round of the NHL playoffs by the Anaheim Ducks in 2026. This loss marked their lowest points total since 2018-19, finishing the season with just 93 points.

McDavid’s contract is structured to leave room for the team to maneuver under the salary cap. He left millions on the table, indicating a commitment to building a competitive roster alongside Leon Draisaitl.

However, McDavid played through an ankle injury during the playoffs, which may have impacted his performance. The Oilers have not won a Stanley Cup in the last two seasons despite reaching the finals.

Key details:

McDavid signed a two-year extension set to expire in 2028.

The Oilers finished the 2025-26 season with 93 points.

They were eliminated from playoff contention by the Ducks with a score of 5-2.

McDavid acknowledged that there aren’t many young players coming up in the organization. “There’s no secret that with a team that pushes for it every year like we have… there’s not a ton of young guys coming up in the organization, you know?” he remarked.

The uncertainty surrounding player development and roster changes looms as the Oilers prepare for another season. With McDavid’s leadership and talent, fans remain hopeful for a brighter future.

“If Hughes was quick to extend Texier’s contract, I wonder what he’s waiting for to offer an extension to ‘our guy’—he brings great depth and is a pro in his work ethic and attitude,” an anonymous source remarked, highlighting the urgency surrounding Joe Veleno’s contract situation.

Veleno, currently a depth forward for the Montreal Canadiens, has become a focal point as the team looks to secure its future. Kent Hughes, the General Manager, has been praised for his strategic decisions, yet the lack of movement on Veleno’s extension raises eyebrows.

The Canadiens, one of the youngest teams in the NHL, began their rebuilding phase four years ago. This approach has allowed the Canadiens to assemble a competitive roster, notably one of the youngest in the NHL. With a top line under contract until 2030 for a combined 23.4 million USD, the team’s financial structure is becoming clearer.

Hughes has previously extended Alexandre Texier’s contract, which adds to the anticipation surrounding Veleno’s situation. The Canadiens’ top-four defensive unit is also locked in for a similar duration, totaling just 29.5 million USD.

As the NHL salary cap is projected to increase significantly in the near future, the Canadiens are expected to free up approximately 17.5 million USD by the end of the 2026-2027 season. This financial foresight positions the Canadiens to be a Stanley Cup contender for many years to come.

With Veleno’s contributions evident in his 74 games played, the pressure is mounting for Hughes to act. The combined impact of players like Suzuki and Hutson is considered greater for a team, further emphasizing the need for strategic contract management.

As fans and analysts await news on Veleno’s future, the urgency for Hughes to make a decision grows. The Canadiens’ trajectory hinges on these pivotal contract negotiations, and the clock is ticking.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding the timeline for Veleno’s extension, but the stakes are undeniably high for the Montreal Canadiens as they navigate this crucial juncture.

The TVA is considering a proposed cap on executive compensation that could significantly reduce salaries for top officials, including CEO Don Moul.

What is the proposed compensation cap for TVA executives?

On March 12, 2026, a significant proposal emerged regarding the compensation structure at the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). President Donald Trump has suggested a cap on employee compensation at $500,000, a move that could drastically reduce the salary of TVA CEO Don Moul from $5.7 million to over 90% less. This proposal raises critical questions about executive pay in public utilities and the implications for over 10,000 TVA employees.

How does this proposal impact TVA’s leadership?

The proposed cap would not only affect Moul but also the broader executive team at TVA, including CFO Tom Rice, who earned $2 million in 2025, and Chief Nuclear Officer Matt Rasmussen, who earned $1.6 million. The TVA board, currently dominated by Trump’s appointees, is reviewing the president’s memorandum regarding these compensation limits. White House officials have stated that “TVA’s seven-figure compensation packages are inconsistent with other public sector leadership roles,” indicating a push for alignment with federal pay standards.

What led to this moment?

The TVA, established in the 1930s, has long been a subject of discussion regarding its executive compensation practices. The federal law that created TVA shapes how executive pay is determined, and past compensation levels have drawn scrutiny. For instance, TVA’s previous CEO, Jeff Lyash, earned $10 million before being denied a raise for two years. This history of high compensation has prompted calls for reform, especially in light of public sector salary norms.

What are the implications of the proposed changes?

Should the cap be implemented, it would represent a significant shift in how TVA compensates its executives. The proposal aims to bring TVA’s leadership pay into alignment with comparable positions in the federal government, as stated by White House officials. However, it is important to note that while Trump has expressed criticism of Moul, he does not have the authority to fire him; that power lies solely with the TVA board.

What is the current status of the proposal?

The TVA board has acknowledged receipt of the memorandum and is currently reviewing it. The outcome of this review could reshape the compensation landscape at TVA and set a precedent for how public utilities manage executive pay. As discussions unfold, the board’s decision will be crucial in determining whether the proposed cap will be enacted.

What remains uncertain?

Details remain unconfirmed regarding the timeline for the board’s decision and how employees will respond to the proposed changes. The implications of this proposal extend beyond just executive salaries; they touch on broader issues of pay equity and the role of federal oversight in public utilities. As the TVA navigates this complex landscape, stakeholders will be watching closely to see how these developments unfold.

Background on Rashan Gary

Rashan Gary was a first-round pick by the Green Bay Packers in the 2019 NFL Draft and has been a significant contributor to the team’s defense. Over his career, he has registered a total of 46.5 career sacks, showcasing his ability to pressure opposing quarterbacks. In recent seasons, Gary has maintained a consistent performance, recording 7.5 sacks in each of the last two seasons and achieving a career-best of 9.5 sacks in 2021.

Breaking Development

In a surprising move, Rashan Gary has been traded from the Green Bay Packers to the Dallas Cowboys. The trade, which took place on March 9, 2026, was finalized for a fourth-round pick in the 2027 NFL Draft. This decision comes as the Packers look to clear salary cap space, with the trade freeing up nearly $11 million for the team this season.

Contract and Performance

As part of the trade, Gary signed a four-year rookie extension worth $96 million in 2027, which is set to pay him $18 million this year unless reworked. Despite not being a high snap count player throughout his career, Gary’s impact on the field has been undeniable. Last season, he played in every game except for the regular-season finale and participated in 58.3% of the defensive snaps.

Reactions from Key Parties

Brian Gutekunst, the Packers’ general manager, commented on Gary’s performance, stating, “I thought he started out really, really strong.” Meanwhile, head coach Matt LaFleur noted, “He’s never been a huge snap count guy, if you look at the course of his career.” These statements reflect the Packers’ recognition of Gary’s contributions, even as they move forward with this trade.

This trade marks a notable shift for both teams, especially considering the Cowboys previously traded Micah Parsons to the Packers before the 2025 season. Jerry Jones, the Cowboys’ owner, has a history of engaging in trades with the Packers, which adds an interesting layer to this transaction.

Future Implications

As Rashan Gary joins the Cowboys, observers are keen to see how he will fit into their defensive scheme and what role he will play moving forward. The Cowboys are expected to leverage his skills to enhance their pass rush, while the Packers will need to adjust their defensive strategy in light of his departure. A farewell message had been posted to Gary’s Instagram account but was quickly deleted, indicating the emotional weight of this transition.

What Comes Next

Details remain unconfirmed regarding how the Cowboys plan to utilize Gary in their upcoming season. However, it is clear that both teams are poised for changes that could impact their performance in the NFL landscape. The trade not only reshapes Gary’s career but also sets the stage for new dynamics within both the Dallas Cowboys and the Green Bay Packers.

What does the recent Leafs trade mean for the team’s future?

The Toronto Maple Leafs have recently traded Nicolas Roy to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for two draft picks. This trade raises important questions about the direction of the team and its strategy moving forward. The immediate answer is that the Maple Leafs are looking to enhance their future prospects while managing their current salary cap situation.

Details of the Trade

Nicolas Roy, who has played 428 regular-season games and scored 186 points, is now a member of the Avalanche. His experience includes 79 playoff games, making him a valuable asset for Colorado as they aim for success. In return, the Avalanche will send their unprotected 2028 first-round pick to the Maple Leafs, contingent upon their 2027 first-round selection not being in the top 10. This conditional pick reflects the strategic considerations both teams are making as they navigate the complexities of the NHL.

Current Team Dynamics

The Maple Leafs are currently facing challenges, sitting seventh in the Atlantic Division and enduring a six-game losing streak. General Manager Brad Treliving has indicated that he is not expected to make significant moves at the trade deadline, which suggests a more cautious approach as the team assesses its options. The best-case scenario for the Maple Leafs involves selling players to create salary cap flexibility for the 2026-27 season, which is crucial for their long-term planning.

Future Considerations

As the Maple Leafs look to the future, they are focusing on acquiring young players, prospects, and additional picks. Oliver Ekman-Larsson has emerged as a key player that the Maple Leafs might target in a potential trade for a first-round draft pick. Additionally, Matthew Knies is another player who could be on the trading block if a substantial offer is made. These considerations highlight the team’s intent to build a robust roster capable of competing in the coming years.

Coaching Perspective

Craig Berube, the head coach, has acknowledged the difficulties the team has faced recently, stating, “It’s hard. For sure it’s hard. It’s been difficult here for a bit, especially coming out of the break. … But I keep my head down and coach. I coach the players I’ve got that are going on the ice.” This sentiment reflects the challenges of maintaining team morale and performance amid a tough stretch.

Looking Ahead

The Maple Leafs’ recent trade and their current position in the standings suggest a pivotal moment for the franchise. With pending unrestricted free agents, the team must decide whether to deal these players or attempt to re-sign them. The outcome of these decisions will significantly impact the team’s future direction and its ability to compete effectively in the NHL.

As the Maple Leafs navigate this transitional phase, the implications of the recent Leafs trade will unfold over time. While the immediate focus is on managing the current roster and addressing the salary cap, the long-term strategy will be crucial for the team’s success in the coming seasons. Details remain unconfirmed about further trades or moves, but the organization is clearly in a period of reflection and planning.

Discussions are becoming more serious as the Oilers approach a deal to acquire Blackhawks defenseman Connor Murphy.

And off we set.

Trade Talks Heat Up

Discussions have ramped up between the Edmonton Oilers and Chicago Blackhawks regarding a potential trade involving defenseman Connor Murphy, as reported by Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman on Monday.

Murphy, 32, has played in 60 matches this season for the Blackhawks, netting four goals and accumulating 13 points, having dedicated the last nine years to the Windy City. He’s a player that Oilers general manager Stan Bowman is quite familiar with, as he was the one who acquired Murphy for Chicago in a June 2017 trade with the Arizona Coyotes, in exchange for Niklas Hjalmarsson.

The 6-foot-4, 212-pound right-handed defenceman is recognized for his strong defensive skills, making him a challenging opponent, despite lacking significant offensive contributions. His performance in Chicago this season illustrates this, as he generates offense at a rate seven percent below the league average, while delivering defensive value at a rate seven percent above the league average, according to HockeyViz, which assesses his overall impact as that of a low-end second-pair defenceman.

Murphy’s Season Performance

Connor Murphy is entering the last year of a four-year contract valued at $4.4 million AAV and has a no-trade clause that includes ten teams.

Although he has been somewhat overlooked on the depth chart, averaging the least amount of five-on-five minutes per game among Blackhawks defensemen, he is the team leader in penalty kill minutes. As of Tuesday’s games, Chicago’s penalty kill is ranked first in the league with an 85.7 percent success rate.
