The new Steam Controller has launched, aiming to enhance the gaming experience for PC gamers with innovative features.

Will Greenwald described it as “much more solid, comparable with an Xbox gamepad in heft and grip curve.” This controller is fully customizable and compatible with almost every game in the Steam library.

Orders for the Steam Controller opened on May 4 at 1 p.m. ET. It features two regular analog sticks, face and shoulder buttons, optional back buttons, and two trackpads. The layout is symmetrical and similar to Sony’s design.

Notably, the controller has a unique charging puck that allows for easy charging while playing. Jessica Conditt noted that “the puck snaps onto the belly of the controller for charging,” making it user-friendly.

The Steam Controller promises over 30 hours of battery life on a single charge. Additionally, its internal design allows for easier repairs and modifications.

The charging puck can support up to four controllers at once. Valve designed the Steam Controller with community input from the Steam Deck’s user base, incorporating feedback into its functionality.

The touchpads utilize capacitive technology from Cirque, enhancing precision in gameplay. The Steam Controller aims to tackle previous issues faced by gamers using traditional input devices.

The original Steam Controller was released in 2015 but was considered a noble failure. Valve hopes this new iteration will redefine controller support for gaming PCs and beyond.
