John Garrett, a beloved figure in hockey, passed away at 74, leaving behind a legacy as both a player and a cherished broadcaster.

Garrett was known for his entertaining personality and connection with fans. “He was so damn likeable. No bullshit,” said Ed Willes, reflecting the sentiments of many.

Born on June 17, 1951, in Trenton, Ontario, Garrett played two seasons of Junior A hockey for the Peterborough Petes. He was drafted by the St. Louis Blues in 1971.

Garrett had a six-season career in the NHL with teams including the Whalers, Nordiques, and Vancouver Canucks. He also played in the WHA before joining the NHL.

Following his playing career, he became a longtime broadcaster for the Vancouver Canucks. Dan Murphy remarked, “John’s great superpower was his ability to connect with people, just in a friendly way.” This connection made him a staple in hockey broadcasting.

In recognition of his contributions to the sport, Vancouver honored him with John Garrett Day after his broadcasting career ended in 2023. Fans celebrated his impact on the game.

Garrett’s legacy will endure through his stories and connections to the game. His passing leaves many reminiscing about his time as both a player and an engaging voice in hockey.
