In response to the backlash, Gale defended his collection, stating, “They wish to paint a picture that is untrue and hurtful to my family, my friends, and those in Niagara that believe in the hard work I have undertaken.” He emphasized that his work is about making necessary changes for the people of Niagara.
Gale’s proposal to amalgamate Niagara’s municipalities had already met strong opposition, and the recent revelations regarding his artifact collection have further complicated his position. He explained, “A member of the communist party circulated a dated document that listed my name as the owner of a historical book found in many libraries.”
