“I felt that people were just taking the beauty all for granted. They weren’t even noticing it,” said Linda Poole, a key participant in the upcoming Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival.

Set to commence on April 17, 2026, this festival marks its 20th annual tribute to the stunning cherry blossoms that grace Metro Vancouver. The event promises a variety of activities, including the popular Blossoms After Dark and The Big Picnic, designed to engage the community and celebrate the beauty of spring.

In Richmond, the Cherry Blossom Festival will take place just days earlier on April 12, 2026, featuring unique cultural demonstrations such as folding origami animals. With 255 Akebono cherry trees planted in Richmond, the festival aims to educate attendees about the significance of these trees and the cultural heritage they represent.

“When you see something beautiful like these cherry trees, the instinct is to want to touch the flowers and pull them down to get a close camera shot, but the wood is brittle and they break really easily,” cautioned Egan Davis, emphasizing the need for care during the festival.

Douglas Justice, a horticulturist at the UBC Botanical Garden, added, “Every year that’s going to shorten the life of the tree. We need to make sure that we try to reduce as much of the stress that we can possibly affect.” The UBC Botanical Garden is home to about 55 different types of ornamental cherry trees, making it a focal point for festival activities.

The cherry blossom season is not only significant in Vancouver but also holds cultural importance in Tokyo, where the cherry blossom forecast is broadcast on national television. The season in Tokyo is expected to begin on March 21, 2026, leading to a week to 10 days of breathtaking blooms.

As the Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival approaches, organizers are eager to remind the public of the beauty surrounding them, hoping to foster a deeper appreciation for these natural wonders. The festival serves as a reminder of the fleeting nature of the cherry blossoms, encouraging attendees to cherish the moment.

With the excitement building, both festivals are set to draw crowds eager to experience the vibrant displays of cherry blossoms, cultural activities, and community spirit. The anticipation for these events continues to grow as the dates draw nearer.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding any additional events or changes to the festival schedule, but organizers are committed to providing a memorable experience for all attendees.
