Early Tuesday, the Government of Canada announced a $19.5 million investment in Winnipeg’s defense industry. This move aims to enhance the country’s defense capacity amid an uncertain global environment.
Magellan Aerospace Limited will receive $8 million to establish a state-of-the-art machining center in Winnipeg. StandardAero is set to expand its campus with an $8 million federal investment, focusing on aerospace maintenance capabilities.
Additionally, Win-Shield Devices will create a personal protective equipment manufacturing facility with a $3.5 million investment. These projects are projected to create over 150 jobs and preserve more than 100 existing positions.
The Canadian defense industry contributes nearly $10 billion to the national GDP. Winnipeg is home to the operational headquarters of the Royal Canadian Air Force, underscoring its strategic importance.
The Regional Defense Investment Initiative (IRID), valued at $379.2 million, aims to support regional development through such investments. “In an uncertain global environment, Canada must rely on its own industrial strength,” stated the Honorable Eleanor Olszewski.
Honorable Rebecca Chartrand emphasized Manitoba’s talent and expertise: “The province has the necessary industrial strength to meet current defense and security needs.” StandardAero expressed gratitude for the support from Economic Development Canada for their expansion efforts.
Rob Ranson from StandardAero noted, “PrairiesCan’s support accelerates our transition from development to production.” As of midday, officials have not confirmed further details about timelines or additional projects related to this initiative.
This significant federal investment reflects Canada’s commitment to strengthening its defense capabilities while fostering job growth in Winnipeg’s aerospace sector.
