A suspected hantavirus outbreak on the MV Hondius cruise ship in the Atlantic Ocean has resulted in three deaths and sickened at least three others.

The first victim was a 70-year-old man who died onboard. His wife collapsed at an airport in South Africa and later died in a hospital.

As of midday, one patient remains in intensive care in a South African hospital. This individual is a British national.

Approximately 150 tourists were onboard the ship during the outbreak. The vessel is currently docked in Praia, Cape Verde.

Health officials have stated that hantavirus spreads through contact with rodents or their urine and feces. A public health investigation is underway to assess the situation.
