Significant Outages Across Québec
“The majority of outages should be resolved by 11 PM [Thursday],” stated François Legault, the Premier of Québec, as the province faced a substantial hydro panne de courant affecting numerous residents. Restoration Efforts Underway
Efforts to restore power are in full swing, with around 2,000 workers, including independent contractors, actively working to repair the network. Despite the challenges posed by the weather, the restoration teams are making progress, and the majority of outages are expected to be resolved by Thursday night, according to Legault.
As of Thursday afternoon, over 100,000 households remained without electricity, highlighting the scale of the disruption. In the Montreal region alone, 32 outages were reported, affecting approximately 10,000 homes. Additionally, 19,928 households in Centre-du-Québec were also without power, illustrating the widespread nature of the outages.
Public Safety Concerns
In response to the outages, an advisory for boiling water was issued in Sainte-Marthe-sur-le-Lac due to a power outage at the local water treatment plant. This precautionary measure underscores the potential public health risks associated with prolonged power outages, particularly in areas dependent on electric water treatment facilities.
Louis-Olivier Batty, a spokesperson for Hydro-Québec, remarked, “Des dégâts sont nombreux, mais sont assez facilement réparables,” indicating that while the damage is significant, it is manageable and repairable. This statement reflects the optimism among the utility’s officials as they work to restore services.
