Instagram Outage Reported
Instagram is currently facing a widespread outage affecting users across the United States. As of 10:03 PM EST on March 10, over 6,000 users reported problems on Downdetector, with many expressing frustration over the inability to send or receive direct messages (DMs).
Details of the Outage
The outage has been particularly severe in major cities such as Los Angeles, Phoenix, Chicago, Washington D.C., and New York. According to reports, 68% of complaints involved app disruptions, while 19% were related to server connection issues and 7% to posting troubles. Users noted that Instagram’s messaging system became completely non-functional during this time.
Many users took to other platforms to voice their concerns, with comments like “Instagram down I REPEAT INSTAGRAM DOWN” and “Are Instagram DMs down or… am I cooked?” highlighting the confusion and frustration surrounding the outage. Some users shared their experiences, stating, “Instagram went down in the middle of 3 different conversations,” and others expressed relief, saying, “Instagram went down when my friend started questioning me, THANK GOD.”
This outage underscores the dependency of Instagram users on private messaging for communication, as many turned to competitors like WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger during the disruption. Downdetector indicated a spike in user complaints beginning in the evening hours, with some users also experiencing broader server connection issues that prevented them from loading their feeds or stories.
Current Status and Official Response
As of now, Meta has not released a formal statement addressing the technical issues or providing a timeline for resolution. It is noteworthy that technical issues at Instagram do not seem to be affecting other Meta-owned platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp.
Uncertainties
Details remain unconfirmed regarding the official cause of the outage. Additionally, claims linking the outage to the US-Iran conflict are unverified.
