John chayka: Mats Sundin and Could Lead Toronto Maple Leafs

Mats Sundin and John Chayka could form an unprecedented leadership duo for the Toronto Maple Leafs, aiming to restore the team’s pride after a disappointing season.

Quote from Elliotte Friedman: “I’m under the impression it’s gonna be Sundin and Chayka and they just have to close the deal.” This statement highlights the potential shift in leadership for the struggling franchise.

As of early Tuesday, Mats Sundin is being considered for a significant front-office role. Meanwhile, John Chayka is in talks for the general manager position. The GM role has been vacant since March 30, 2026.

The Maple Leafs missed the playoffs for the first time in 10 years during the 2025-26 season. They feel that the pride of the team got damaged last year, according to Friedman.

Sundin is a former captain and holds records as the franchise’s all-time leader in points and game-winning goals. He played 981 games over 13 seasons with the team from 1994 to 2008.

Chayka, aged 36, was previously the youngest GM in NHL history when he took over the Arizona Coyotes in 2016. His drafting history includes selecting notable players like Clayton Keller and Jakob Chychrun.

However, uncertainties remain. Sundin has never held an NHL front-office role before. If he decides against taking the job, it’s unclear how the Leafs would proceed with filling the GM role.

Chayka resigned from his position with the Coyotes in July 2020 and faced suspension by the NHL for all of 2021. The final decision on their hiring is still pending.
