The numbers
Sony is raising the prices of its entire PlayStation 5 hardware lineup globally, with some markets seeing increases as high as $150. In the United States, the standard PS5 with a disc drive will now retail for $649.99, marking a $100 increase.
The PS5 Digital Edition will also see a price hike of $100, bringing its new price to $599.99. Meanwhile, the PS5 Pro will increase by $150, setting its new retail price at $899.99. Canadian consumers will face similar increases, with the PS5 with a disc drive priced at $819.99 CAD and the PS5 Digital Edition at $749.99 CAD. The PS5 Pro will be priced at $1,099.99 CAD, and the PlayStation Portal will be available for $319.99 CAD.
This marks the second time in less than a year that Sony has increased hardware prices, following a $50 increase implemented in August 2025. The company cites ongoing pressures in the global economic landscape as the driving force behind this decision. “With continued pressures in the global economic landscape, we’ve made the decision to increase the prices of PS5, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal remote player globally,” said Isabelle Tomatis, a spokesperson for Sony.
The price changes will take effect on April 2, 2026, impacting gamers worldwide. As the gaming industry continues to grapple with economic challenges, observers are closely watching how these price hikes will affect sales and consumer sentiment.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding the potential for further price adjustments in the future, as the global economy remains volatile. Sony’s decision to raise prices reflects broader trends in the tech and gaming industries, where rising costs are becoming increasingly common.
