A new study from Baylor College of Medicine suggests that a single dose of psilocybin can induce lasting anatomical changes in the brain. This discovery could help explain the therapeutic effects of psychedelic therapy.

The study involved 28 healthy volunteers who had never taken a psychedelic before. Each participant took a 25mg dose of psilocybin, which elicited a powerful psychedelic experience. Researchers observed changes in brain structure still apparent a month after administration.

Within an hour of taking psilocybin, EEG results showed a surge in brain entropy. Those with the most significant spike in entropy reported improved wellbeing one month later. Prof. Robin Carhart-Harris remarked, “It’s remarkable to see potential anatomical brain changes one month after a single dose of any drug.”

This study aligns with ongoing efforts to explore psilocybin as a treatment for conditions like treatment-resistant depression and anxiety disorders. Texas is moving closer to federal approval for psychedelic treatments, with the FDA fast-tracking several compounds.

In recent years, Texas has allocated funding for psychedelic research, particularly focusing on veterans with PTSD. In 2021, legislation passed to support this research initiative. Logan Davidson stated, “Nothing we’re seeing play out on the national stage would have happened without Texas.”

The urgency for effective mental health treatments grows as over 49,000 Americans died by suicide in 2023. This stark reality underscores the need for innovative solutions like psychedelic therapies.

Yet, uncertainties remain regarding the long-term effects and safety of psilocybin use. While promising results emerge, more research is needed to understand the full implications of these findings.
