Punch’s story began in heartbreak when his mother abandoned him shortly after birth at Ichikawa City Zoo. Born on July 26, 2025, Punch was given a stuffed orangutan as a surrogate mother, a unique approach to nurturing an orphaned animal. Fast forward to March 26, 2026, Punch has made significant strides in his social integration with fellow macaques. After being placed in the enclosure with other monkeys on January 19, 2026, his caretakers at the zoo have observed a gradual yet encouraging transformation. By mid-March, Punch began hugging, playing, and bonding with other monkeys, showcasing natural primate social behaviors.
Takashi Yasunaga, a zookeeper at Ichikawa City Zoo, expressed optimism about Punch’s progress, stating, “We’ve been seeing many more scenes like that, and as caretakers, we find that very encouraging.” His colleague, Shunpei Miyakoshi, noted, “Now he’s communicating with other monkeys and it’s great to see him reaching those milestones.
