Tibet Commemorates 67th National Uprising Day
On March 10, 2026, an international delegation of dignitaries gathered in Dharamshala to commemorate the 67th Tibetan National Uprising Day, expressing solidarity with Tibet and its people.
Michael Brand emphasized the urgent need to raise global awareness about the threats facing Tibetan culture and language, stating, “Never give up, the time will come.” This sentiment was echoed by other leaders present at the event.
During the press conference, Jiří Oberfalzer condemned China’s actions in Tibet, describing them as multiple crimes against humanity. Hans-Gert Pöttering highlighted the principle of self-determination for the Tibetan people, while Juris Vilums drew parallels between the struggles of Tibet and Ukraine.
On this significant day, Tibetans held peaceful demonstrations worldwide, with participation from around 100 members of Tibet Support Groups across 32 countries. This annual commemoration has been observed since the uprising in 1959, which resulted in the deaths of approximately 86,000 Tibetans.
The Chinese government has faced accusations of attempting to erase Tibetan identity through various education policies. Reports indicate that around one million Tibetan children are separated from their families and placed in state-run boarding schools, raising concerns about cultural assimilation.
In the lead-up to the commemoration, the 39th Annual Tibet House US Benefit Concert took place at Carnegie Hall on March 3, 2026. Notable performers, including Robert De Niro, Elvis Costello, and Jesse Malin, participated to raise funds for Tibet House US. Jesse Malin remarked, “This is a crazy time, so it’s good to be here with so many people whose hearts are in the right places.”
Allison Russell, another performer at the concert, stated, “War, never holy. All children are our children. No exceptions.” This sentiment resonates with the ongoing plight of Tibetan children and the broader struggle for human rights in the region.
Sophie Richardson pointed out the critical issue of Beijing’s efforts to erase a distinct Tibetan identity, underscoring the importance of international awareness and advocacy for the Tibetan cause.
As Tibetans and their supporters continue to rally for recognition and rights, the global community’s response remains crucial in addressing the challenges faced by the Tibetan people.
