ukraine drone strikes tuapse refinery — CA news

The repeated drone strikes on the Tuapse refinery in Russia have resulted in significant environmental damage and public health warnings for local residents.

Residents of Tuapse were ordered not to drink tap water following the attacks. The local health authority advised that bottled water is a safer option.

In April 2026, Ukrainian drones struck the Tuapse oil refinery three times. The first strike occurred on April 16, igniting a fire that lasted two days.

The second strike hit on April 20, causing another fire that extended for five days. These attacks destroyed at least eight storage tanks, leading to petroleum leaks into the Tuapse River.

Emergency workers have cleared 12,600 cubic metres of contaminated material from the area. Authorities reported elevated benzene levels in the air, prompting warnings to limit outdoor activities.

A black rain phenomenon has also emerged in Tuapse, covering cars and animals with oil residue. This has raised concerns about long-term ecological impacts.

Sergei Solovev, an environmental expert, described the situation as an ecological disaster. He emphasized the risk posed to local wildlife due to contamination.

Volunteers have established animal cleanup centers to assist distressed animals affected by oil spills. However, Ruslan Khvostov warned that oil slicks block oxygen, threatening aquatic life in the river.

The situation escalated after the third drone strike led to evacuations in Tuapse. As of midday Tuesday, officials have not confirmed if further strikes are imminent.

The conflict between Ukraine and Russia has intensified since 2022. Both nations remain engaged in ongoing hostilities that could impact future operations at such facilities.
