Alex Zanardi died at the age of 59. He was an Italian auto racing champion and Paralympic gold medalist. His family announced his death on Saturday, stating he passed away on Friday night.
Zanardi’s career was marked by two life-altering accidents. He lost both of his legs in a racing crash in 2001. Despite this, he went on to win four gold medals and two silvers at the 2012 and 2016 Paralympics.
Born in Bologna on October 23, 1966, Zanardi competed in Formula 1 for five seasons. He also won two CART championships in 1997 and 1998. His achievements transformed the perception of disability in Italy.
Zanardi faced another serious challenge when he was involved in a handbike accident in 2020. This incident left him with significant injuries but did not diminish his spirit or resolve.
Tributes poured in from various sports figures and organizations. Giorgia Meloni stated, “Italy loses a great champion and an extraordinary man, capable of turning every challenge of life into a lesson in courage, strength, and dignity.”
