Investigators have concluded that the Bayesian yacht sank not due to a storm, but because of crew negligence and improper safety measures. The tragic incident occurred on August 19, 2024, off the coast of Sicily, resulting in the deaths of Mike Lynch, his daughter Hannah, and five others.
The vessel sank near Palermo at around 5 a.m.. Initial reports suggested that adverse weather caused the sinking. However, further investigation revealed manageable weather conditions—only a squall was present.
Italian prosecutors stated that the crew’s improper actions and underestimation of the weather significantly contributed to the incident. They raised the possibility of criminal negligence against the captain and two crew members.
An interim report indicated that wind speeds reached 63.4 knots, which were sufficient to capsize the yacht. Nevertheless, investigators asserted that the Bayesian should have been able to handle such powerful weather.
The investigation also highlighted vulnerabilities in safety procedures. According to the Marine Accident Investigation Branch, these vulnerabilities were not identified in the stability information book carried on board.
Officials have not clarified the exact reasons behind the crew’s improper actions. This uncertainty complicates accountability as families seek justice for their loved ones.
The Bayesian was recovered from the sea ten months later in June 2025. This recovery marks a significant milestone for those affected by this negligent shipwreck.
The sinking was initially intended as a celebration of Mike Lynch’s recent acquittal in a fraud case. The tragic outcome underscores serious concerns about safety protocols on luxury vessels.
