Air India is embarking on a major overhaul of its Boeing 777 and 787 aircraft interiors, with an investment exceeding $400 million. The airline aims to enhance passenger experience significantly, with the first reconfigured Boeing 777-300ER expected to enter service in early 2027.
As part of this ambitious project, Air India will retain the first-class cabin on its Boeing 777s, ensuring that premium travelers continue to enjoy luxurious accommodations. The airline plans to reconfigure all 13 of its Boeing 777-300ERs by October 2028, marking a significant upgrade for its long-haul fleet.
The investment reflects Air India’s commitment to modernizing its fleet following its privatization by Tata Group in late 2021. The airline is also set to introduce a premium economy product across its long-haul operations, catering to a growing segment of travelers seeking more comfort without the price tag of business class.
In addition to the Boeing 777s, Air India is retrofitting its Boeing 787-8 aircraft, with the first retrofitted unit expected to enter service by May 1, 2026. The new configuration will feature a total of 250 seats, including 20 business class seats, 25 premium economy seats, and 205 economy seats, enhancing capacity and comfort.
Air India has also been leasing six former Delta Air Lines Boeing 777-200LRs and six former Etihad Airways Boeing 777-300ERs to bolster its operations during this transition period. This strategic move is aimed at maintaining service levels while the retrofitting project is underway.
Meanwhile, Air France continues to operate its Boeing 777-300ER on the route from Detroit to Paris, where the business class configuration features a 2-3-2 layout. This highlights the competitive landscape in which Air India is operating as it seeks to modernize its fleet.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding the timeline for the completion of the retrofit project, with potential supply chain issues posing challenges. Observers are keenly watching how Air India’s fleet transformation will impact its market position and customer satisfaction in the coming years.
