Two children were found dead inside a vehicle in northwest Calgary, prompting a homicide investigation by the Calgary Police Service. The bodies were discovered by officers on Thursday morning after a call was received around 10 a.m.

The children are believed to be under the age of 10. The deaths are considered suspicious, leading investigators to label this as a homicide investigation.

A man was taken into custody near the scene. However, authorities have not confirmed the relationship between him and the children.

The area around 14th Street N.W. was closed to traffic during the investigation. Investigators are working to identify the children and determine their parents.

Calgary Police Service Insp. Darren Smith stated that this situation is heartbreaking for officers involved. He remarked, “This is very hard on our officers. Our officers are human and this is heartbreaking for everyone.”

The medical examiner will determine the cause of death and the sex of the children. As of midday, police do not believe there is a risk to public safety.

Investigators are expected to be on scene for several hours collecting evidence related to this tragic case.
