“They’ve served us well for the past 30 years but all organizations evolve…” said Coun. Jason Heistad regarding the recent dissolution of Parkland Community Planning Services (PCPS).

Early Tuesday, Innisfail learned that PCPS, a key planning service since 1995, was dissolved due to financial challenges. This decision impacts multiple communities in Central Alberta.

PCPS had an annual cost for Innisfail’s services ranging from $20,000 to $30,000. At the time of dissolution, PCPS held remaining liabilities of about $140,000, with Innisfail responsible for $20,917.61.

Innisfail is also owed $4,150 for subdivision fees related to the 2025-26 period. The loss of PCPS raises concerns about future municipal planning and subdivision applications.

Meanwhile, as of midday Tuesday, the Innisfail Aquatic Centre has reopened after undergoing modernization. The upgrades include new universal change rooms.

Community reactions vary. One swimmer noted, “It is different; but, it’s OK. It will grow on us!” This reflects a mix of excitement and adjustment among local residents.

A sign misspelling ‘Innifail’ instead of ‘Innisfail’ has also drawn attention. The Department of Transport and Main Roads acknowledged this error and plans to install a replacement sign within three weeks.

Officials have not confirmed how the dissolution of PCPS will specifically affect upcoming municipal projects or planning processes.

The community looks ahead as it navigates these significant changes in both planning services and recreational facilities.
