Jacob Winterton has tragically passed away at the age of 25 after a brave fight against Stage 4 bone cancer. His death has sent shockwaves through the hockey community, with many expressing their sorrow and condolences.
Winterton, who played in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) for the Flint Firebirds and Oshawa Generals, recorded 18 goals and 19 assists, totaling 37 points in 125 regular-season games. He was selected in the 10th round (189th overall) of the 2017 OHL Priority Selection.
In addition to his OHL career, Winterton played four seasons of U SPORTS men’s hockey at the University of Guelph, where he was also pursuing a degree in Real Estate. His contributions to the sport were significant, having previously played under-16 AAA and under-18 AAA hockey with the Ajax-Pickering Raiders.
Ryan Winterton, Jacob’s younger brother and current player for the NHL’s Seattle Kraken, shared his grief on Instagram, stating, “I lost my best friend.” He further expressed, “You weren’t just someone I loved, you were someone I looked up to, someone who guided me, believed in me, and helped shape the person I am today.” This heartfelt tribute highlights the deep bond the brothers shared.
Josh Dixon, a friend, described Jacob as “the strongest, most courageous person I have ever known,” underscoring the impact Winterton had on those around him. The Flint Firebirds issued a statement mourning his loss, saying, “Condolences from the Firebirds as we lose one of our own far too young.” This sentiment has been echoed by other NHL players and teams, who have also expressed their condolences.
