Madeleine Gagnon, a prominent figure in Québec literature, passed away at the age of 87 on May 1, 2026. Her death coincided with the recognition of young athletes Emma Ducharme and Florence Tremblay for their achievements.

Gagnon was born on July 27, 1938. She published around 40 works over nearly five decades. Her last book, ‘Depuis toujours’, was released in 2013.

She received the Governor General’s Literary Award in poetry in 1991 for ‘Chant pour un Québec lointain’. Gagnon’s contributions to feminism and her social engagement made her a significant figure in Quebec literature.

As of midday, Emma Ducharme and Florence Tremblay were honored at the 2026 Sport-Études Celebration. Each student-athlete received a national scholarship valued at $2,000.

Ducharme is currently training with the Rimouski Dolphins swim club. She aims to represent Canada in the 2028 Olympic Games.

Tremblay is now part of the Canadian artistic swimming team. She recently participated in a competition in Paris where Canada ranked sixth.

Ellena Rissanen from the Rimouski swim club said, “She remains an inspiration for the members of Club Vivelo.” Meanwhile, Ducharme expressed her goal: “I also aim to represent Canada in 2028 in Los Angeles or 2032 in Brisbane, Australia.”

The municipal library of Amqui is named after Madeleine Gagnon, honoring her legacy. The news of her passing has prompted reflections on her impact on literary and feminist circles.
