Martin Short’s upcoming Netflix documentary, ‘Marty, Life Is Short’, reveals the profound personal losses he has faced throughout his life. The film is set to premiere on May 12, 2026.
The documentary focuses on Short’s comedy career and includes interviews with friends and collaborators such as Steve Martin and Eugene Levy. It aims to provide insight into how these experiences shaped his life.
Short experienced significant grief recently with the death of his daughter, Katherine Smart, in February 2023. She was just 40 years old.
Additionally, he lost close friend Catherine O’Hara at the age of 71 in January 2023. His wife, Nancy Dolman, passed away in 2010 at the age of 58.
Short’s history of personal loss extends further back. He lost his older brother David in a car accident when he was just 12 years old. His mother died of cancer when he was 17, followed by his father’s death from a stroke three years later.
Eugene Levy praised Short’s talent: “In this business, in the world of comedy, there’s nobody faster, there’s nobody smarter, and there’s nobody funnier.” Steve Martin added humorously about hosting him: “Let’s say you’re gonna host a dinner party. And you’re gonna invite Marty. And then it turns out Marty can’t come — you cancel the party.”
In reflecting on life’s unpredictability, Short remarked, “In life, sometimes you hit a green light. And sometimes, for no reason, it’s red.” He also humorously noted about his experiences with loss: “We had speed dial to the funeral parlor.”
The documentary promises to be an emotional journey through Short’s life and career while addressing themes of grief and resilience.
