Fire Breaks Out at Retirement Home
“Staff from the retirement residence are still in the process of trying to confirm whether everyone was safely evacuated,” stated a representative from the Mission RCMP as a significant fire engulfed the Chartwell Carrington House on March 9, 2026.
The blaze erupted around 6 p.m. on 7th Avenue near Cedar Valley Connector, prompting a swift response from the Mission Fire Rescue Service and multiple firefighting units. Flames and smoke were visible rising from the building, which was reported to be fully engulfed shortly after the fire broke out.
In response to the emergency, a Reception Centre has been established at the nearby Mission Leisure Centre to assist evacuees. Emergency Support Services are on site to provide necessary aid, including blankets delivered by nurses who arrived with three carloads of supplies.
As firefighters battled the structure fire, they conducted a search of the third floor and confirmed it was clear. However, the situation remains fluid, with 7th Avenue closed in both directions between Cedar Street and Briskham Street to facilitate emergency operations.
“Mission Fire Rescue Service and all available emergency resources are on scene and actively responding,” the City of Mission reported, emphasizing the scale of the response to the incident.
By 7:07 p.m., firefighters reported that all was clear in Building 1, but a confinement crew continued to battle the blaze until 7:15 p.m. The Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service has also been paged for mutual aid to assist with the ongoing firefighting efforts.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding any injuries resulting from the fire, as officials continue to assess the situation. The community is urged to avoid the area, with the City of Mission advising, “If you do not need to be in the vicinity, choose an alternate route and keep roads clear for emergency vehicles.”
As the situation develops, additional updates will be provided as they become available, ensuring that the public remains informed about the ongoing response to this significant incident.
