Pokémon Pokopia has quickly soared to the top of my favorite cozy games list, blending elements from both series beautifully.
In the past, such crossovers often face challenges in honoring both of their source materials. At times, one franchise may don the guise of another like a hollow disguise (similar to a Mimikyu masquerading as a Pikachu), banking on nostalgia to drive sales. Yet, it is clear that Pokémon Pokopia is not just another mindless cash grab; instead, it emerges as a distinct creation that harmoniously integrates both aspects of its heritage, allowing it to flourish. As a life simulation game, it further enriches this unique blend.
Blending Two Iconic Franchises
The idea is quite distinctive for both series: you play as a Ditto who finds itself in a world that appears to be post-civilization, where both humans and Pokémon have disappeared, leaving a deserted realm ready to be rediscovered. Unlike a human beginning anew in a city or a 10-year-old sent off on an adventure alone, you are a shapeshifting Pokémon assuming the identity of your cherished, absent trainer. (Before proceeding, it’s important to highlight that although a postapocalyptic backdrop might appear bleak for a game series aimed at young children, the overall atmosphere remains cheerfully vibrant, much like Animal Crossing and Pokémon. Players discover remnants of past lives and work to restore crumbling or ruined structures, revealing signs of significant climate events and humanity’s efforts to mitigate them, yet the experience never feels burdensome. Ditto swiftly acquires a straightforward yet powerful set of abilities for altering the surroundings by mimicking the moves of various creatures, such as Squirtle’s Water Gun, which irrigates soil or crops, and Bulbasaur’s Leafage, which encourages new grass to grow. These abilities can be utilized to establish Habitats that attract particular Pokémon. Players can absorb abilities from other Pokémon using Ditto.
The essence of Pokémon Pokopia’s unique gameplay lies in its blend of mechanics: you “catch ’em all” by engaging with the surroundings, much like various cozy games available today. This integrated approach merges the finest aspects of both genres. You experience the excitement of completing your Pokédex and connecting with other Pokémon (in a manner that charmingly echoes the Mystery Dungeon series), all while enhancing your town or world with the delightful features of cozy life-simulation games, such as farming, mining, crafting, and cooking. The game beautifully combines elements of Animal Crossing and Pokémon.
Omega Force chose to implement a real-time system, so similar to others in the genre, the world of Pokémon Pokopia mirrors the external time. The lighting shifts accordingly, and specific Pokémon are only available during particular times of the day. Typically, this structure results in a game that is more enjoyable in brief sessions, akin to Animal Crossing—there are only a limited number of activities to engage in each day, unless you immerse yourself in a customization or redecorating endeavor. The game combines elements of Animal Crossing and Pokémon.
Nostalgia Meets Innovation
Nonetheless, I did not perceive this to be the situation in this instance. Regardless of the hour, Pokémon Pokopia provided numerous other realms to investigate once the typical cozy game tasks were completed. The environment needs to be tidied, restored, and repopulated with Pokémon, and that’s merely the beginning of Ditto’s responsibilities. The game features a central storyline with Professor Tangrowth.
This mission truly reaches into “other frontiers” as well, since the game provides a limited selection of sandbox environments outside the initial area, each showcasing distinct ecosystem variations, themes, and quests. For instance, while the easiest Habitat to create consists of four grassy squares, the unique version of each area attracts different Pokémon—but the variations extend much further, featuring specialized Habitats for coastal and mountainous regions. The game also includes a central storyline with Professor Tangrowth.
Engaging with other Pokémon resembles a blend of the Mystery Dungeon series and the Villagers from Animal Crossing, allowing you to select their unique homes, interact socially, and fulfill their various needs. Each day introduces fresh requests from your neighbors, which enhance their comfort and subsequently improve the overall Environment of each area. Enhancing the Environment broadens the possibilities for crafting, shopping, and other activities, enabling you to more effectively meet the requests of the community. Players can absorb abilities from other Pokémon using Ditto.
Distinctive Features and Mechanics
Fortunately, the conversations among the creatures are quite genuine for the most part, feeling more distinct than the eight Villager types found in Animal Crossing: New Horizons. As you progress, you can begin to identify specific personality traits based on the unique speech patterns of the Pokémon. Overall, the Pokémon-centric dialogues contributed to maintaining the game’s freshness, even after several days of immersive gameplay. Throughout your journey, Pokémon Pokopia manages to capture the essence of a classic main game experience, even without engaging in battles or collecting Gym Badges. The process of completing the Pokédex is delightfully enjoyable thanks to the new addition of the Habitat Dex, which boasts a wide and well-balanced array of Pokémon from various generations. While some of my personal favorites may not be present—an inevitable outcome given the challenge of satisfying everyone without extending the game’s development time—discovering a cherished Pokémon feels even more rewarding. Among my favorite revelations were the subtle references to the broader series. Pokémon Pokopia excels at weaving established traditions into innovative formats that align with its fresh genre and environment. I wouldn’t want to give anything away, as discovering these surprises was truly enjoyable, and I strongly suggest immersing yourself without prior knowledge to experience the journey as it unfolds. Ditto’s adaptable skills enable all of this to happen, and for an amorphous entity pretending to be human, it’s astonishing how fluidly Pokémon Pokopia operates. In a genre where crafting worlds manually is essential, having user-friendly mechanics and accurate controls is vital; luckily, the underlying engine is quite solid. Ditto possesses several traversal skills that can be acquired by assisting specific Pokémon, such as the ability to jump rather than climb over individual blocks. Each new skill effectively broadens the environment and enhances exploration, providing a genuine sense of achievement. Pokémon Pokopia is a life simulation game.
The most delicate aspect of the gameplay engine is targeting. Depending on the ability currently equipped or the nearby objects, the squares that Ditto can interact with are marked by a faint dotted outline—a cross for Water Gun, a few squares for Rock Smash, based on your direction, and so forth. Overall, the game’s engine manages this quite effectively; with careful adjustments to the camera and Ditto’s placement, it becomes relatively straightforward to navigate the world in three dimensions. My only (slight and subjective) concern in this area is the size of Water Gun’s cursor compared to the environment. The levels primarily consist of desolate, arid terrain, and depending on the climate you wish to create, this often involves splashing numerous tiles… one 5-square cluster at a time. There is a method to temporarily enhance this range, but it complicates aiming, making it almost preferable to stick with the standard approach. It would be beneficial to switch between various aiming patterns to optimize time usage. Alternatively, you can leave regions unadorned until you decide to enhance them. Players can absorb abilities from different Pokémon, which adds another layer to the strategy.
Conversely, crafting your environment is significantly more straightforward and user-friendly than in Animal Crossing New Horizons. Nintendo’s top life-simulation title recently introduced a feature that allows players to lock their viewpoint using the ZL button for easier item placement and tool usage; however, Pokémon Pokopia offers this functionality from the outset, paired with a more streamlined interface and fewer limitations. (While the restrictions in Animal Crossing serve legitimate purposes, it feels refreshing to break away from them, and I hope the upcoming installment in that series matches this level of fluidity. A minor issue in Pokémon Pokopia arises from a common challenge in cozy games: pacing. Constructing buildings necessitates gathering the necessary materials and enlisting a team of Pokémon for help, followed by a waiting period for the completion of the task. For instance, a simple hut requires around twenty minutes, whereas some essential structures in each level can only be finished the following day. This is all quite standard for the genre, wouldn’t you agree? Pokémon Pokopia is a life simulation game.
In the meantime, some housing designs require you to wait until the following day, which might seem reasonable if they were adequately spacious upon completion. Yet, after spending roughly twelve hours for a larger dwelling to be constructed, I discovered it was elegantly pre-fabricated but also quite constricted within. I would have been wiser to create multiple smaller homes or to try crafting a similar design myself. The game has a larger scale than Animal Crossing.
Still, the experience of waiting for a timer has never seemed so trivial. After nearly a week in Pokémon Pokopia, I feel as though there are countless realms still to explore. Even while progressing at a steady pace for this review, I found myself captivated by a multitude of delightful side quests, or simply wandering and terraforming just for fun. The game features charming dialogue from various Pokémon characters, making this sandbox an environment where I could easily lose track of time.
Moreover, this doesn’t even take into account the multiplayer aspect, which introduces an entirely new layer to the game, but sadly wasn’t possible to explore during the review timeframe. From the hands-on preview I experienced and a quick exploration of the multiplayer-specific features, this mode appears to be just as comprehensive as the main game, and engaging with both elements should enhance the overall experience.
I’m eagerly anticipating the new adventures that await in Pokémon Pokopia, as well as the creativity that others will unleash with its Minecraft-like tools.
