The numbers
The construction of a new roundabout at the intersection of Portugal Cove Road, Major’s Path, and Airport Heights Drive is scheduled to begin on April 13, 2026. This project aims to significantly improve traffic flow and enhance safety for both drivers and pedestrians in the area.
Traffic will continue to move through the area during construction, but disruptions are expected. Authorities have confirmed that one lane of traffic will remain open in each direction on Portugal Cove Road at all times. During peak traffic hours, one lane will also remain open in each direction on Major’s Path and Airport Heights Drive, minimizing inconvenience for commuters.
In a related development, the average evaluation of public funding for sports in Portugal stands at a concerning 2.30 on a 1–5 scale. This figure highlights the ongoing challenges faced by sports institutions in the country. Approximately 61% of higher education institutions in Portugal do not have their own sports facilities, forcing around 89% of these institutions to depend on external venues for sports activities.
Moreover, a staggering 65.8% of FADU clubs report a lack of coaches and sports technicians, while 64.5% highlight insufficient support for dual careers. Diogo Salgado Braz, a representative from FADU Portugal, stated, “We are facing a very concerning scenario, which reveals a significant structural gap in university sport in Portugal compared to other European realities.”
He further emphasized, “The lack of funding and infrastructure, combined with limited strategic priority, continues to constrain the development of the sector.” This situation poses a significant barrier to the growth of university sports, which are essential for promoting student well-being and institutional development.
Cláudia Sarrico, another advocate for university sports, noted, “Strengthening the role of sport within higher education systems is important, particularly in promoting student wellbeing and institutional development.” FADU Portugal aims to reinforce advocacy efforts for a stronger university sport system, especially as they prepare to host two 2026 FISU World University Championships later this year.
The construction of the roundabout marks the final phase of the multi-year Major’s Path and Portugal Cove Road Improvements project, which is expected to enhance not only traffic conditions but also the overall safety of the area. As the project progresses, observers will be watching closely to see how these improvements impact local traffic and safety metrics.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding the full extent of disruptions expected during the construction phase, but officials are committed to keeping the public informed as the project unfolds.
