Early Tuesday, the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service made a horrifying discovery in Cumuto. They found 56 bodies abandoned at a cemetery. Most of the remains are those of children.
The bodies included 50 infants and six adults—four males and two females. Some adult corpses had identification tags similar to those used at morgues.
Preliminary indications suggest these remains may have been unlawfully disposed of. Forensic analysis is currently underway to determine their origin.
This incident comes amid a backdrop of rising crime rates in Trinidad and Tobago. The country has struggled with organized crime, highlighted by a significant increase in homicides over recent years.
In 2020, the homicide rate was 20 per 100,000 people. By 2024, it had surged to 45.7 per 100,000. In light of this latest discovery, public concern is likely to intensify.
Allister Guevarro, a spokesperson for the police service, addressed the troubling nature of this finding. “The nature of this discovery is deeply troubling,” he stated. He acknowledged the emotional impact it will have on families and the wider national community.
Guevarro emphasized that every cadaver must be handled with dignity and lawful care. He vowed that any individuals or institutions violating this duty would be held fully accountable.
Kamla Persad-Bissessar also weighed in on the situation. “If criminals want to terrorize law-abiding citizens and their families,” she said, “I will do everything legally possible to terrorize criminals and those who aid and abet them.” This statement indicates a potential shift in law enforcement strategy.
As of midday Tuesday, details remain unconfirmed about how these bodies ended up abandoned. The investigation is ongoing.
