“Webb spent his life transforming what was just a sideline school activity into one of the fastest growing sports in the world with his passion, leadership and endless determination,” stated the International Cheer Union following the news of Jeff Webb’s death.

Webb, who died at the age of 76, was a pivotal figure in cheerleading, founding Varsity Spirit in 1974. Originally established as the Universal Cheerleading Association, Webb’s vision propelled cheerleading into a global movement.

His journey took a tragic turn two weeks prior to his death when he suffered a head injury during a game of pickleball. After being removed from life support, Webb’s passing marks a significant loss for the cheerleading community.

“Jeff Webb was a remarkable innovator and a true pioneer of his sport. His vision helped elevate cheerleading from a local activity into a worldwide movement that inspires young people across continents,” said José Perurena, President of the International World Games Association.

Webb’s influence extended beyond cheerleading; he was a mentor to Charlie Kirk and played a key role in the conservative movement. His efforts also led to the International Olympic Committee granting provisional recognition to cheerleading in July 2021.

Despite his achievements, Webb’s legacy is not without controversy. He faced legal scrutiny over alleged antitrust violations and sexual abuse cases within cheerleading, which have cast a shadow on his career.

In 2011, Webb sold Varsity Spirit to Herff Jones and continued as CEO and president of the combined entity. The company was later acquired by Charlesbank Capital Partners for $1.5 billion in 2014, resulting in Webb reportedly making $34.8 million from the sale.

Webb officially severed ties with Varsity in December 2020, stating, “I’m leaving Varsity Spirit, but I’m not leaving cheerleading.” His commitment to the sport remained evident until his final days.

As the cheerleading world mourns his loss, many reflect on his profound impact. Webb’s legacy will continue to inspire future generations of cheerleaders.

Details remain unconfirmed regarding the circumstances surrounding his accident and subsequent health decline.
