“The investigation conducted by local law enforcement has concluded and has been found to be unfounded,” stated Eric Forest, a spokesperson for the Sûreté du Québec, following a tense incident at Montreal-Trudeau International Airport.
The airport was thrown into chaos when a suspicious suitcase was discovered, initially treated as a potential bomb threat. This prompted a temporary ground stop that affected flights across a wide area, including much of the eastern and midwestern United States.
During the investigation, one of the two runways at Montreal-Trudeau was closed, causing significant delays. Departures to the airport were delayed by an average of 54 minutes due to the increased crowds and heightened security measures.
Forest elaborated, “Standard security protocols were activated to ensure the safety of the travelling public and the facilities following the identification of a suspicious suitcase on board a flight that landed at YUL.” The suitcase’s discovery led to the arrest of two men, aged in their 20s and 30s, respectively.
Fortunately, both runways are now open, and the airport is fully operational again. The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration had initially classified the situation as a bomb threat, but the investigation ultimately determined that the threat was unfounded.
